Study Strategies for Math As a high schooler, you are required to take at least a few years of math. For a subject that is so prominent in the high school curriculum, theres still a lot of misconceptions. Many people think that you are either good at math or bad at math; theres no in-between and theres no way to succeed if youve always struggled thats about as false as 2+2=5. While some people have certain skill sets that lend nicely to math classes, there are math study strategies that can be learned and mastered by all students to succeed. How do you exercise these strong study strategies for math, you ask? Its as easy as 1, 2, 3 1. Think of math as a process know the steps Getting the correct answer is always a great feeling, but if you dont know how you got to that answer, you may be in trouble. Math is incredibly process based; step by step you are required to know the procedures. Think of math like cooking: if you forget an ingredient, the end result is ruined, and you need to pay careful attention to each task. So, how do you focus more on math as a process? Show your work, from beginning to end. Whether youre studying for a test, doing homework, or completing a quiz, you should be writing down all of your steps. This will help you in the long run if you notice you are getting problems incorrect. When you show your work, you can isolate the errors and identify exactly where you need to go back to study. When you are told to show your work on a test, show all of your work. Even if your final answer isnt correct, you could still get partial credit for the process you used. Learn your formulas what they are and how to use them. Math isnt like a history class; you cant just memorize the terms and ace the exam. Memorizing a math formula is only the beginning. If you dont know what each piece of the formula means, when to use it, and how it will help, you wont be as successful with it. You should utilize your textbook, math notes, and potentially math practice tests to get an in-depth understanding of key math formulas for your class. 2. Go back to the basics Math concepts build upon one another, which is one of the reasons it can get harder and harder as the years go on. If you struggle with basic math concepts, you may continue to struggle as you get into more difficult processes. Not only will your material become more challenging as the year progresses, you may be required to know and apply information from previous math classes. Here are some study strategies that can help you learn the basics and avoid falling behind: When possible, draw things out (just like you learned in elementary school). Its effective! Would a diagram help? How about a chart? Even if a graph isnt necessary, visualizing the problem can help you determine what exactly you are dealing with. This can be particularly helpful for those who consider themselves visual learners. Keep your math notes from previous classes, and refer back to them when necessary. Just because you are in a geometry class doesnt mean your algebra notes might not come in handy later. Hold on to your old class materials and reference them if youre struggling with old concepts. Be sure to understand the foundation of these concepts before you try to master harder ones. Tackle each problem methodically When you look at a four-page test, dont think of the test as a whole. Instead, think of each problem as its own test, with its own challenges and its own strategy. There are methodical approaches you can use to solve each problem successfully Determine what the question is asking. This may seem like an obvious first step, but especially with word problems, the actual question can sometimes get buried. Some students see the numbers and automatically start solving a problem before they even know what that problem is exactly. You dont want to waste your time and energy solving a question that isnt being asked! Once you have a confident understanding of the question at hand, you can start to tackle it for the solution. Also note that sometimes youll need to consider whether it is a two-part question. For instance, do you have to solve one problem first in order to get the information to solve another problem? Highlight or underline important words, phrases, and numbers. Sometimes, word problems include bits of information that you dont necessarily need. The extra information in these problems is often intended to confuse you and see if you can determine the relevant materials. It makes us feel bad that someone doesnât really like or want us. When you see youâve been rejected in black and white itâs can take the wind out of our sail as a job seeker. After we get a rejection letter and recover our balance the tendency is to shy away from that company, those people and maybe even that type of job. It can and often does, change our behavior and often not in a way that serves us well. Donât let that be you. Letâs look at a rejection letter first and then what your actions and behavior should be following a rejection letter. What does a rejection letter really mean? If you made it through all of the screening processes as a candidate, you are obviously well qualified for the position you pursued. It also means youâre doing a lot of things right in your job search to get this far. Keep doing the right things. A rejection doesnât mean you were a poor candidate, it means they felt more aligned with someone else. You never know how difficult the decision may have been between you and someone else. They had to make a decision and it could have come to something like a coin toss simply so they could move forward. They had to pick someone. It means they thought well of you and despite any negative thoughts you might have about them, theyâre feeling just fine about you. The door on future opportunities is not closed. In fact, now that they know you so well, you could be considered for other openings. Itâs more productive to utilize the applicant flow you have rather than dumping all the resumes and interview information than to start over again the next time. The fact that the company went so far as to send you a rejection letter is a sign of a well-run company. So often these days, the job search is a black hole of communications. If they thought enough of their candidates to do this level of follow up, you want to keep them on your radar. What should your behavior be? If you loved the position, hiring manager and company then keep working at getting hired for a position. Just because they rejected you for this position doesnât mean you wouldnât be perfect for the next one. Itâs not a door closer. You now have a list of âinsiderâ contacts that you can use to your advantage. After you let the dust settle for a while, circle back around with your contacts and let them know you want to be considered for other positions now or in the future. Showing some spunk and confidence is alluring and memorable. Keep your perspective about what this means. A rejection letter shouldnât cause you to change what you are doing unless this letter makes it a cool dozen youâve received. If you have repeatedly got to the final round of interviews and not chosen, then rethink how you might be presenting yourself. An equation of the type ax + b = 0 where a not equal to 0 is called a linear equation in the variable x. A linear equation can be used to solve real world problems. Firstly we need to translate the verbal statement into mathematical statement and then solving the resulting equation. The statement which says that one quantity is not equal to another is called an Inequation. Generally linear inequation in the variable x may be expressed as ax + b is greater than or equal to 0 ax + b is less than or equal to 0 An Inequality is solved using the same rules as that of solving any linear equation except for multiplying or dividing by a negative number we always need to reverse the symbol of the inequality. Example 1: The perimeter of an equilateral triangle is 48 cm. What is the measurement of each of the sides? Solution: Let the length of each side be x. Equilateral triangle has all three sides equal. So, 3x = 48 Therefore, x = 48 / 3 = 16 Each side measures 16 cm. Example 2: Solve 2x + 1 5, x belongs to N. Solution: 2x + 1 - 1 5 1 [Subtracting 1 from both sides] 2x 4 x 2 [Dividing both sides by 2] The solution set = {1}.

It should come as no surprise, then, that schools will begin offering an AP Computer Science Principles course in the fall of 2016. The course, which will emphasize creative ways to solve problems in the larger world, is meant to prepare students for both college and employment situations. Rightfully so skills in computer science are required or are strongly beneficial for nearly every field of employment. Computer science skills have become essential for students entering the workforce. With this in mind, here is an intro to the new AP Computer Science Principles course. AP Computer Science Principles development The AP Computer Science Principles course has been in development since 2008 and has been the collaborative effort of more than 50 high school and higher education teachers. The course is meant to be interactive, current, and relevant. AP Computer Science Principles content Instead of simply reviewing a programming language, the course will cover technology and programming as a solution for computer issues. It will focus on computers and their interaction with and to society not revolving around computers entirely, but examining the ways computing has influenced other fields. In addition to computer science, the course will build communication and collaboration skills, emphasize problem solving as individuals and as groups, and examine technology in the world. The class will focus on seven big ideas entrenched in the principles of STEM education: creativity, abstraction, data and information, algorithms, programming, the Internet, and global impact. AP Computer Science Principlesframework This class is meant to mimic a first semester introduction to college computing course. The course teaches the computational thinkingpractices necessary for developing the knowledge and skills to analyze data and communicate. Because the course focuses around seven big ideas, each uses questions and concepts to connect every idea to the next. These questions tend to be large-scale questions that rely on information learned in previous sections. As with many AP courses, the Computer Science Principles course features thorough learning objectives that provide students with clear goals for the course and the AP exam to follow. Next to each learning objective (which are numbered so that their relationship to big ideas and enduring understandings is clear), students will find essential knowledge statements, which will help students perform well on the AP exam and in every section of the course. This course will be creative, iterative, and exploratory, which makes it very useful for a variety of learners. AP Computer Science Principles test The AP test for this course will consist of two parts. First, the AP exam and then the through-course AP assessment. The AP examwill be administered as a multiple choice test filled out with paper and pencil. Students will be required to demonstrate their understanding of course learning objectives. In the through-course assessment, students will complete two performance tasks involving programming. Theyll look at student learningin a more comprehensive way than can be achieved on a timed test. Students will perform their knowledge in a real world way. Overall, the course looks to provide valuable job skills to students interested in technology.
